Coffee with Glenhaven – August 2019

Jul 29, 2019 | Coffee with Glenhaven

Hello,
We are so happy to welcome you to our first Coffee with Glenhaven post. We have been so busy the past six months and we wanted to take the time to share with you what we have been up to.

This month we are sharing stories from our Disability Teams. Each Coffee with Glenhaven post we will update you on the stories from our different teams.

MAC Program (North)

Mac North began supporting Participants in February this year and we currently have 5 participants booked into the program on Tuesdays.
Our Plans are to offer different styles of the program for each day of the week. Themed days like cooking, gardening, woodwork, physical fitness and day trips around our community are all planned for Mac Days.

Mac North has discovered a need for respite camps here in Launceston. Mac North offers a camping style of Respite camp, where our participants are encouraged to cook on an open fire, learn some basic bush crafts and enjoy the outdoors. The weekend is about teamwork and capacity building, whilst having a fun time.

We were excited to hold our first camp in April with 3 participants. This camp was held at “Carnacoo” Scout Camp at Paper Beach. The success of this camp has led to us booking 3 more camps. If you are a teenager or young adult you can book in for one of our camps now. Find out more by emailing us below.
Mac North hope to extend this style of respite camps to include staying in tents as the warmer months of Summer come around.

Mac North will soon begin supporting participants with a woodwork focused day, beginning on Mondays. Wattle Group Inc. has ceased its operations recently. They had been supporting participants for many years. Mac North had been liaising with the Wattle group management to see how we can continue to support their former participants.

There are exciting times ahead as a purpose-built space for Mac North is being developed at the Door of Hope Complex for Mac North. This will have around 500 square meters of undercover space to “run around in” and to enjoy activities. Our Mac Room will be around 120 metres square, which is about one and a half times the size of our current room. What is particularly exciting is that we will have our own kitchen where we can continue capacity building in the area of cooking. We feel that it is really important for participants to learn to cook and become as independent as possible.

Our staff here at Mac North are really keen to support participants in reaching their NDIS Goals whilst enjoying the company of others.
My Active Choice (MAC) in Launceston is keen to engage with new Participants.
Please feel free to contact Craig at Mac North to find out more.

Disability person learning about independent living

Disability Residential Supports

Over the last few months, two new residential homes have begun the next exciting chapter in five of our participant’s lives. A home in Devonport for two young men and a Ulverstone home where a young lady and two men reside. The Devonport home has had some teething problems but we are working through this and can see a positive outcome.
The residential home in Ulverstone has had a wonderful beginning with the residents settling well and hosting a bbq recently for their families. It was a great success with families getting to know each other and the Glenhaven staff a little better.
Over the next 6-12 months, we will be looking to assist others to be able to obtain their goal of independent living and acquiring new life skills and friendships.

MAC (My Active Choice) Program North-West

The MAC program continues to be busy each day with lots of chatter, laughter and activities happening. During June, each week, 4 members of the Friday group get the opportunity to plan, shop and cook lunch for the rest of the group. One group have enjoyed a copy of the musical ‘Mary Poppins’. Our participants have also enjoyed off site activities such as swimming, Laser Tag, going out for lunch and a visit to The Arboretum to see a variety of trees and the different stages they are in such as losing leaves etc. On site, a variety of craft has been done including a button craft, making playdough and then making volcanoes out of playdough. Money skills are practised with Australian ‘play’ notes and coins and participants are also learning about Road Safety.
MAC – where everyday friendships are made, fun is had and skills learned and practiced.

Thank you for reading all about what is going on in our Disability teams. Stay tuned for next months Coffee with Glenhaven which will come out at the start of September.
