Festive Family Fun – 10 Activities to Bring On The Christmas Cheer

Dec 1, 2023 | Family Tips

The festive season is upon us, and what better way to embrace the Christmas spirit than by spending quality time with your loved ones?

Christmas is a very special time with family. It brings everyone together, makes us happy, and gives us a boost as we finish the year. When you have little ones around during the holidays, it’s extra special to see their excitement for everything Christmas brings.

It’s super easy to get busy with all the craziness of Christmas and reach the end of the year feeling like you missed out on making special memories with the kids. Therefore, in this blog, we’ve put together a list of 10 things you can do with the kids before Christmas to make this season even more fun. The main idea here is to spend good time together as a family and remember what Christmas is all about:

  1. Deck the Halls Together: Gather the family for a decorating afternoon. Put up the tree, hang stockings, and let everyone contribute to the festive atmosphere. This team effort will not only make your home look stunning but also bring a sense of togetherness.
  2. Bake and Decorate Christmas Cookies: Dive into the world of delicious treats by baking and decorating Christmas cookies as a family. From gingerbread men to kiss biscuits, let everyone’s creativity shine as you use festive cookie cutters and colourful icing.
  3. Christmas Movie Marathon: Set up a cosy movie night with classic Christmas films. Make it a marathon with favourites like “Home Alone,” “Elf,” and “The Santa Claus.” Prepare some popcorn, snuggle up in blankets, and enjoy the magic of your home cinema.
  4. Create Handmade Christmas Cards: Spread joy to friends and family by crafting your own Christmas cards. Set up a card-making station with art supplies, glitter, and festive decorations. It’s a thoughtful way to show appreciation and spend creative time together.
  5. Create a Summer-inspired Family Art Day: Make the most of the warm weather by organising a family art day outdoors. Gather some canvases, paints, and brushes, and let creativity flow under the sun. It’s a fun and artistic way to bond while enjoying the beauty of the festive season and first month of Summer.
  6. Christmas Light Scavenger Hunt: Take a stroll through your neighbourhood/town/street or explore local parks to admire the sparkling Christmas lights. Create a scavenger hunt list with items like “a house with a Santa Claus display” or “a tree covered in twinkling lights” for the kids to tick of and to to add an element of excitement.
  7. Enjoy a Beachside Christmas Picnic: Embrace the warm summer vibes by organising a beachside Christmas picnic for your family. Pack a delicious festive spread, set up a cosy spot on the sand, and soak up the sun while enjoying the sound of waves on the shore or while splashing around in them. It’s a wholesome way to celebrate the season in a relaxed and beachy style.
  8. Build a Gingerbread House: Unleash your families creativity by building and decorating a gingerbread house as a family. This delicious activity combines teamwork and tasty treats, resulting in a sweet masterpiece to enjoy after dinner.
  9. Attend a Community Event: Check out local events and festivities happening in your community. From tree lighting ceremonies, carols to parades, participating in these events together will not only create lasting memories but also connect your family to the wider holiday celebrations.
  10. Adopt an Elf On The Shelf:
Only take on this tradition if you dare… There is nothing worse than getting into bed after a big day and realising you forgot to move the elf and now have to get up and find a good hiding spot for it! The concept behind Elf on the Shelf, is that he moves each night to a different location and gets up to something mischievous overnight. Then in the morning the kids get the joy of running around to find where the Elf got up to in the night. Has he knocked over the Christmas tree, eaten all the Vegemite or made a mess of the toilet paper? He’s a mischievous one, but it is always fun seeing the kids reaction each morning to his shenanigans!

As the holiday season unfolds, hold on to the moments spent with your family through these festive activities. Whether you’re crafting, singing carols, or simply enjoying a cosy movie night, these experiences will create a warm and joyful atmosphere, making this Christmas truly special for everyone involved.
